CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY            


Collectively, the Certificate in English Language Proficiency series is composed (5) stand-alone programmes which purport to build up the non-native English speaking students' level of competency and confidence in the English language in a gradual, scaffolded and structured way so that they can live and study effectively in an English speaking environment.

Generally, the aims are:

1. To develop the skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening

2. To enable students to use grammar correctly

3. To enable students to examine language and form the proper association among linguistic components


The total course duration of each level is 3 months with a total of 150 contact hours for tutor-led teaching and learning activity. The students will be assigned projects, individual and group assignments which they will attend to during the independent study period outside of the class hours. The programmes will focus on the four skill set - reading, writing, listening and speaking and will cover grammar, vocabulary and everyday English. Classrooms are highly conducive, with experienced teachers inducing elements of fun during lessons in and out of the classrooms.


ASSESSMENT / COMPLETION REQUIREMENT


Students must perform satisfactorily in all components with a combined score of 50% across all elements of the assessment. Assessment details are as follows:

CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 1)               


CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 1) is the starting point for students who have a proficiency of IELTS 3 and below.


It is intended for students who have not yet reached the English language proficiency required in the programme they are applying admission to - specifically, year 1 and 2 of Preparatory Course for International General Certificate of Secondary Education Examination. The course is also a pathway for CELP (Level 2).


At the end of CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 1) programme, students will improve their competency up to an equivalent of IELTS 3.5 and will be able to:

Recognise familiar words and very basic phrases concerning themselves, their family and immediate concrete surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.

Understand familiar names, words and very simple sentences, for example on notices and posters or in catalogues.

Understand short simple text.

Interact in a simple way provided the other person is prepared to repeat or rephrase things at a slower rate of speech.

Ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics.

Use simple phrases and sentences to describe where they live and people whom they know.

Write a short, simple text, for example sending holiday greetings.

Fill in forms with personal details, for example entering their name, nationality and address on a hotel registration form.


Focus of the skill works will be:

Listening: Regular listening sessions will be in place to improve the students’ ability to understand the main meaning of the text

Reading: Reading texts will be relatively short at the beginning of the course to build on the previous knowledge and will be progressing to longer and more challenging texts as the course likewise progresses.

Speaking: Opportunity to practice pronunciation and intonation based around the listening and reading activities will be in place

Writing:The writing syllabus provides models for students to analyse and imitate

CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL2)            


CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 2) is for students who, upon entry to the course, has a proficiency of at least IELTS 3.5.


It is intended to prepare students to meet the English language proficiency requirement of the programme they are applying admission to, specifically year 3 of Preparatory Course for International General Certificate of Secondary Education Examination or the 2 year Preparatory Course for Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination. The course is also a pathway for CELP (Level 3).


At the end of CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 2) programme, learners will improve their competency up to an equivalent of IELTS 4.0 and will be able to:


Use basic cohesive devices with some accuracy.

Apply new vocabulary accurately in academic and social situations.

Increase control and comprehension of word formation and structures.

Occasionally use subordinate clauses as sentences move from simple to more complex.

Talk about familiar topics with accuracy and identify main idea and supporting details in passages or articles on familiar topics.

Begin to talk about unfamiliar topics.

Begin to elaborate when answering questions.

Demonstrate understanding of some irregular sound/letter relationships.

Complete simple writing tasks, including a paragraph with proper structure.

Ask for clarification and respond to requests for clarification.

Use, understand and identify cardinal and ordinal numbers in written and spoken form.


Four skills focus will be in the forms of:


Listening: Regular practice of listening skills will come in the form of listening to monologues and dialogs.

Reading: As the students move through the course, reading texts will become longer and challenging with the introduction of an increasing amount of lexis.

Speaking: Freer speaking practice is made possible by less controlled exercises based on the reading and listening texts, including exchanges of opinions, discussions and role plays.

Writing: All throughout the course, writing lessons and exercises will be cued from the unit topics with the provision of models for the students to imitate.

CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 3)            


CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 3)is for students who, upon entry to the course, has a proficiency of at least IELTS 4.0.


It is intended to prepare students to meet the English language proficiency requirement of the programme they are applying admission to, the final year of Preparatory Course for International General Certificate of Secondary Education Examination or Preparatory Course for Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination or any of the certificate programmes of various specialisations offered at Shelton College International. The course is also a pathway for CELP (Level 4).


At the end ofCERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 3)programme, learners will improve their competency up to an equivalent of IELTS 5.0 and will be able to:


Use fluent simple speech with successful attempts at more complex speech.

Convey clear meaning, despite some mistakes, in more complex structures of writing and speaking.

Present clear main ideas with some vocabulary appropriate for supportive details.

Apply new vocabulary using knowledge of word formation and structures in familiar and some unfamiliar areas.

Sometimes use subordinate clauses as sentences move from simple to more complex.

Listen to, identify and extract information from concrete and abstract text on familiar and unfamiliar topics from their own personal, social, educational or working life.

Listen and read for both gist and detail.

Predict meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary.

Synthesise relevant information from various texts.

Identify context and register as well as make inferences.


The programme will build – on the foundations from CELP Levels1 and 2 and students will be able to fuse their knowledge of the four skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking as with grammar, vocabulary and everyday English. The students will be helped to reflect on, analyse, solidify, and build on what they already know, to prepare them for an increased fluency and for more advance structures to come at higher level.


The programme ensures that   each student receives instruction focused towards helping the student accomplish the appropriate academic standards in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and enabling the students the chance they need to be well versed in the use of the English language.


On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded a CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 3)


MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum age of 12 years.

Equivalent** of English language proficiency of   IELTS 4 OR

Completion of CELP (Level 2)

CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL4)             



CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 4)is for students who, upon entry to the course, has a proficiency of at least IELTS 4.5.


It is intended to prepare students to meet the English language proficiency requirement of the programme they are applying admission to, either the Preparatory Course in Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination or any of the diploma programmes of various specialisations offered at Shelton College International. The course is also a pathway for CELP (Level 5).


At the end of programmeCERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 4),learners will improve their competency up to an equivalent of IELTS 5.5 and will be able to:


Use both simple and complex speech fluently with greater accuracy of word choice and pronunciation.

Present clear meaning, ideas and supporting details using accurate vocabulary and complex structures in writing and speaking context.

Apply new vocabulary in unfamiliar areas.

Use moderately complex sentence structures with an average use of subordinate clauses

Listen to and read academic texts and be able to identify, extract and integrate information from concrete and abstract texts.

Predict meaning and select appropriate context of unfamiliar vocabulary.

Appraise and present points of view and original thought with a degree of facts, reasons and limited examples, incorporating a moderate range of new vocabulary, with a degree of paraphrasing using accurate connective devices.

Identify main points, secondary ideas, critical details and implications and arguments.


On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded a CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 4).

CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL5)              


CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 5) is for students who, upon entry to the course, has a proficiency of at least IELTS 5.5.


It is intended to prepare students to meet the English language proficiency requirement of the programme they are applying admission to, particularly the current advanced diploma programmes of various specialisations offered at Shelton College International and eventually to the degree qualifications as well.


It is for students who have already achieved a high level of English. They have impressive fluency and can cope with most text-types, able to understand film, literature and newspaper. There will be more fluency-based activities, in-depth treatment of grammar, systematiclexical syllabus with attention to the four skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking as with grammar, vocabulary and everyday spoken English.


At the end of the programmeCERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 5), learners will improve their competency up to an equivalent of IELTS 6.0 and will be able to:


Use different registers of language fluently with greater accuracy of word choice and pronunciation

Demonstrate coherence and clarity of thoughts with a clear overall progression in presenting information and ideas in both spoken and written communication arranges

Understand and use complex language structure to accurately convey precise meaning in familiar and unfamiliar settings.

Identify implicit and explicit meaning and select appropriate context of unfamiliar vocabulary by utilising a variety of language aides, i.e. thesaurus.

Synthesise relevant information from various complex texts using specific strategies for higher order thinking / problem solving.

Express points of view and original thought with facts, reasons and examples, incorporating a wide array of new vocabulary and summarising paraphrasing ability and accurate connective devices.

Reconstruct with ease the main points, secondary ideas, critical details and implications and arguments.

Respond to and express qualified opinions and arguments in a variety of ways.


On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded a CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (LEVEL 5).
